How to make press-ons last longer

Applying press-on nails is easier than you think

If you've ever wondered why one person can wear press-on nails for two weeks while someone else loses one the next day, the difference usually isn't the nails themselves - it's the application.

A few extra minutes spent preparing your natural nails can dramatically improve how long your press-ons lasts. Whether you're trying press-on nails for the first time or looking to improve your results, this guide will walk you through the entire process.

What you'll need

Before you begin, be sure that your workspace is clean from dust, hair, or other oil-based products. Now, gather everything you'll use:

  • Press-on nail set
  • Nail glue
  • Cuticle pusher
  • Nail file
  • Alcohol wipe or nail cleanser
  • UV light

If you've bought from Kandi Nails, each of our kits includes everything except the UV light.

Pro Tip: Working on one hand at a time helps prevent the glue from drying before you're ready.

Step 1: Wash and dry your hands

Start with clean hands.

Wash away any lotions, oils, or residue using soap and warm water, then dry your hands thoroughly.

Even small amounts of moisture or oil can weaken the glue. Avoid applying hand lotion.

Step 2: Prepare your natural nails

This is the step many people rush—but it's also one of the most important.

Before applying your press-ons:

  • Gently push back your cuticles.
  • Lightly buff the surface of each nail including the hidden cuticle layer near the base of the nail
  • Wipe each nail with alcohol to remove any remaining oils.

Your natural nail should feel clean and look frosty/slightly matte.

Step 3: Match the press-ons to your nails

Lay out all of your press-on nails before opening the glue and check to make sure you're applying the proper size for each finger.

A properly sized nail should:

  • Cover the nail from sidewall to sidewall.
  • Sit comfortably without pressing into the surrounding skin.
  • Rest naturally near the cuticle.

Taking a minute to size and check everything before applying glue makes the process much smoother.

Step 4: Apply the adhesive

Less glue is often better than more.

A thin and even layer creates a stronger bond than a large drop that takes longer to cure.

If you're using nail glue:

  • Apply a small drop onto the press-on.
  • Use the press-on to spread it evenly onto your natural nail

Pro Tip: Too much glue can squeeze out around the edges and create a messy finish.

Step 5: Position carefully

Start at the cuticle.

Place the press-on at roughly a 45-degree angle and gently lower it toward the tip of your natural nail.

This helps reduce trapped air bubbles while creating a cleaner fit near the cuticle.

Once you're happy with the position, press firmly and hold for 30 seconds. Try your best to avoid sliding the nail while the glue is setting, and maintain a steady pressure during this process.

Step 6: Immediately Cure

  • Cure the nail under UV light for two minutes.
  • If you're sitting in a dark room with no natural light, cure for an additional minute.
  • Flip your finger over and cure the bottom edge of the press-on for another minute.

Step 7: Don't interrupt the process

Although your nails may feel secure immediately, the glue continues strengthening after application.

For the best results:

  • Avoid soaking your hands in water for several hours.
  • Skip hot tubs, long baths, or swimming immediately after application.
  • Avoid using your nails as tools.

Giving enough time for the glue to fully cure can noticeably improve wear time.
